Plans to tackle Beltoy speeding

The DUP representative received the commitment after raising residents’ concerns about speeding with TransportNI (formerly Roads Service).

She added that TransportNI has said as well as introducing traffic calming measures in the area, it will be informing the PSNI in order for them to enforce the speed limit.

Councillor Johnston said: “I am delighted that TransportNI have agreed to address the concerns of local residents and that there will be a number of traffic management measures placed in the area.

“They are proposing to introduce new traffic management measures in the form of enhanced 30 mph gateway signage, red high friction surfacing at several locations and ‘SLOW’ markings on the smaller red patches within the 30mph speed limit.

A Department of Regional Development spokeswoman confirmed TransportNI has agreed to provide a series of traffic management measures to highlight the existing 30mph speed limit.

She added: “These measures take the form of enhanced 30 mph gateway signage, red high friction surfacing at several locations and ‘SLOW’ markings on the smaller red patches within the 30mph speed limit.”

Noting that 71 people have died on the province’s roads since the start of the year while at the same point in 2012, 40 people had been killed, Councillor Johnston said speeding is one of the main causes of casualties and this must be addressed.

She continued: “We all need to take care on the roads and these measures will, I hope, make motorists think about the speed they are travelling at and keep to the limits.”
