Very often these plant pots end up wrongly in the blue bin resulting in contamination. Recycling bins have now been sited at the Redlands household recycling centre and at Inver Garden Centre so that gardeners can now be assured that their old pots will be disposed of in an environmentally sustainable way.

John Shannon from Inver Garden Centre is delighted with the scheme. He said: “We would encourage customers to return plant pots to Inver Garden Centre as they return to view or buy more plants. Following recent circulation about this scheme in our customer newsletter we have already had a number of positive enquiries from customers.”

Phillip Thompson, director of environmental services at Larne Borough Council added: “It is tremendous to work with a local business to provide a mechanism to maximise the recycling of waste.

“John had previously enquired about recycling plant pots and having identified a company who can process the pots into a valuable resource we wish to commence capturing this waste stream so that we minimise waste and avoid blue bin contamination”.
