Playful dolphins thrill with display in Ballygally Bay

A SCHOOL of dolphins put on a thrilling and playful display along the Larne coastline last Thursday.

Around 20 bottlenose dolphins enthralled bystanders for several hours, as they leapt from the water and coming close enough to shore to be seen easily without the need for binoculars.

The dolphines were spotted in the morning around Carnlough and moved along the cost to Ballygally in the afternoon, filling the bay and constantly dividing into smaller groups and reforming.

Fish were also observed jumping out of the water around the dolphins, indicating they were feeding. The dolphins varied in size, as a number of family groups were swimming together. The following day the dolphins were spotted in Red Bay, Ballycastle and Portrush, before heading back towards Larne near sunset. Again they were observed to be actively feeding.

Larne Council’s biodiversity officer, Cara Barr said that those who were lucky enough to see the dolphines will never forget the spectacle.

“The crowd gasped as the dolphins appeared to be almost playing in the calm sea. Cars stopped along the Coast Road and there was a real buzz of excitement in the air. A number of spectators reported their sightings to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group. This worthy action will help in the conservation of cetaceans in our waters.”

Dr Barr said she was keen to see any photographs taken of the extraordinary display.

“If anyone managed to photograph the dolphins, I would be keen to see their shots. If you would be happy to share them, please get in touch with me on 2827 2313 or email [email protected]

“Detailed shots of the animals fins can help to identify individuals to assess if they return to the area and to see where else they turn up.”

Sightings of marine mammals should be reported to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group at www.iwdg.ie and Dr Barr at the above email address.
