Playgroup chair says group will continue with high standards

The Chairperson of the Drumahoe Community Playgroup says the organisation will continue to provide the high standards of provision it has done over the past twenty plus years despite the disappointment of the refusal of the Department of Education to countenance a statutory nursery in the village.

David Hider said: “In relation to the development plan being turned down, I have to say I am disappointed like everyone else. A lot of hard work was put in behind the scenes.”

On Wednesday (June 25) the Sentinel reported how a development proposal to establish a statutory nursery unit in the school grounds was turned down by the Education Minister.

Drumahoe Primary headmaster Terry McMaster said there was a sense of frustration and bewilderment in the village following the decision, which was taken by the Department on June 17.

Mr Hider echoed these concerns but said the Playgroup will continue to provide the high standards that are in place.

“The staff have carried on under the difficult situation of not knowing there future,” he said.

Drumahoe is the only Controlled Primary in the city, which does not have statutory nursery provision on its school grounds.

DUP Councillor Hilary McClintock also expressed frustration after the refusal.
