Plea for USC support in Limavady

A PROMINENT member of the United Services Club in Limavady has issued a plea for locals to join in and support the club after hosting a hugely successful Jubilee celebration.

The club itself was decked out with bunting both inside the building and outside, and members were able to enjoy in the celebrations to mark the historic occasion in a relaxed environment.

The group were also given heartfelt congratulations by local members of the community, as well sa political representatives, for their efforts to mark 60 years on the throne for Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II.

A member of the organising committee told the Sentinel: “My intention from here on out is to highlight the services of the club. It has been hard hit in recent years by the economic downturn, to the extent where we have had to lay some of the staff off. That was something that we have really been forced into.

“The members of the committee do a lot of voluntary work in the bar, during the quieter times. I would like to appeal to as many people as possible to come along and support the club because at the minute we could really use the support.”

Speaking about the day’s festivities to mark the Diamond Jubilee, Mr Kealey added: “The day itself was a brilliant success. The whole emphasis for us was for it to be a real ‘family’ day and we wanted to get as many children involved as possible. I think that is something that was successful.

“At the end of the day the children are the future of the club. It is a real priority for us to get the youngsters interested in the club, as well as their culture. It is the future for this club, and for anything it is the young people who are going to be the future, so that is something we have been really working hard towards. “We have been working hard to get the entire community together to get behind the club and support us/”

DUP councillor James McCorkell wrote to the club on Saturday evening to say: “Well done to everyone involved in today’s celebrations. From the children’s street party, to the parade and drumhead service and all the other entertainment, the ex-servicemen and women of the Limavady Borough once again did Her Majesty proud. An excellent day, you all deserve a well earned break now. I only hope the people of the Borough continue to support the USC and help keep this important establishment going.”

His party colleague and East Londonderry MLA George Robinson was also in attendance on Saturday. He said: “Massive thank you from everyone at Limavady DUP for having us yesterday, Chris and to those involved in the organising committee. A super day had by hundreds of our townsfolk.”
