UUP councillor Mark McKinty says P&O’s commitment to the Port of Larne must be “questioned” after the company axed its Larne to Troon ferry route.

The company described the route as “loss-making” and said it had come to the decision after a “comprehensive review of its options.”

At a meeting of the Mid and East Antrim council’s Economic Growth and Development Committee on January 18, Cllr McKinty stated: “I’m disappointed that everyone seemed to expect this but P&O kept saying their intention was to replace the vessel and continue the service.

“We need to question their commitment to the port.”

Cllr McKinty suggested an urgent meeting with the Port of Larne to devise a strategy to ensure its future.
