Polar theme for Whitehead talks

'POLE to Pole' is the subject of eight weekly talks to be given under the auspices of Whitehead Queen's University Lecture Group.

Both the Arctic and Antarctic are much in the news these days. This is not the first time they have been affected by climatic warming but today’s rapid rate of ice melt is causing a re-evaluation of these wonderful parts of the world.

The panel of speakers all have first-hand experience of the polar areas and they will cover such aspects as polar physical environments and their biology, polar history - in particular the valuable contribution made by Irish explorers - and polar futures with special reference to the Antarctic Treaty, which dates from 1961.
