Police Appeal after exposure and assault on riverside path

POLICE patrols have been stepped up in the Leighinmohr area of Ballymena following a report last week that a man had assaulted a young woman and indecently exposed himself to her as she walked along a river path.

The path, which stretches from Leighinmohr to Tullygarley, has long been a popular route for dog walkers, joggers and fitness fanatics, and police, therefore, are hopeful that others may have been using the path last Wednesday night, September 15, and might be able to help them trace the man who is alleged to have struck at around 8pm.

Inspector Pete Bouma of Ballymena PSNI said: "We are appealing for anybody who was in the area at that time and who may have information, to come forward.

"Maybe they saw what happened or perhaps they just noticed someone acting suspiciously and could give us a description".

What is known, at this stage, is that the alleged attacker was wearing a dark tracksuit and is in his teens.

"This is a popular path and we know it is well used by dog walkers and joggers, so somebody is bound to have seen something that didn't look right," said Inspector Bouma who said that police patrols in the area have since been increased.

On the basis of "reassuring the public" further, the Inspector stressed that the alleged attack was "a very unusual event in Ballymena" and revealed that an investigation was being taken forward into the incident by the Public Protection Team.
