Police appeal after poppy man attack

The police have appealed for information after vandals attacked a ‘poppy’ statue at the war memorial in Lisburn the night before Remembrance Day.

There had been outrage in the city after it was revealed that the iconic ‘poppy buglar’ had been attacked by vandals and his bugle stolen just hours before the city fell silent to remember those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

A spokesperson for the police said: “It is reported that at sometime during the night of Saturday, November 9 and 9.30am on Sunday, November 10, a bugle was removed from a poppy display at a war memorial, which was also damaged by persons unknown.

Police would ask anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact Police at Lisburn on 0845 600 8000.

“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111,” she added.
