Police appeal for information as murder inquiry is launched

Police have made an appeal for information as a murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a 59-year-old woman in Portstewart on Wednesday.

At a press conference in Coleraine PSNI Station this afternoon, DCI Una Jennings confirmed that the deceased was Margaret ‘Margo’ Evans who lived at 55 Knockancor Drive in Portstewart.

Police were called to the address yesterday at 1.30 following a call from a neighbour.

“Our inquiry into the murder of Margo Evans is ongoing and we want to hear from anyone with any information who could assist in our understanding at what happened at Margo’s family home,” said DCI Jennings.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Knockancor area between the hours of 9am and 2pm on Wednesday 4 June.

“We particularly want to hear from any family, friends or local people who have had any contact with the Evans family over the last number of days.”

DCI Jennings said police were unable to confirm the circumstances of Mrs Evans death.

“The post mortem examination is ongoing and I cannot be descriptive in any detail in relation to the injuries leading to Margo’s death,” the DCI said.

“We are conducting a search of the field at the back of the house as it is in very close proximity to the back yard, which has become an area of significant focus for our inquiry team.”

Mrs Evans was a well known buisness woman in the Portstewart area. A 32-year-old male arrested at the scene is still in police custody.

“It’s fair to say we are not seeking anyone else at this time in relation to this attack. However we are keeping a very open mind at this stage,” added DCI Jennings.
