Police appeal over Dervock attacks

POLICE have appealed for community assistance in bringing to a halt a wave of random attacks on vehicles passing through Dervock.

The PSNI fear if something is not done that someone could be killed or seriously injured.

Despite similar appeals in recent weeks incidents in which stones, potatoes, apples and eggs have been thrown at cars have continued.

There were a number of incidents in the past week with at least three vehicles being struck on body work and reports of other attempts to hit vehicles.

Inspector David Anderson of Ballymoney PSNI said: “There has been an ongoing problem with young people throwing apples, stones, potatoes and eggs at vehicles as they pass through the centre of the village.

“We have spoken to a number of young people and parents and are working with community leaders to try and address the problem but I would impress upon parents to ensure they know where their children are when the majority of these incidents are taking place between 8pm and 10.30pm.

Parents should be asking where their children are?; who they are with? and what are they doing? Not only is this causing damage to people’s cars which is costly to repair and is criminal damage but there is also the risk of causing a serious accident if a driver swerves or a windscreen is smashed.

“We would ask for people in the community to speak to police in confidence. Our Local Neighbourhood Officers are working hard to try and address this but we need the support of the local community. We know people don’t want this in Dervock.

“These are random attacks and there is nothing selective. Local people and people driving through are being attacked and it is anti-social criminal behaviour,” said Inspector Anderson.
