Police attacked at fatal accident scene

POLICE officers investigating the tragic death of a young motorcyclist came under attack from stonethrowers in Londonderry last Thursday.

The 23-year-old man, named locally as Gareth Adams, died following a collision between hiws motorbike and a car at sandbank Cottages, off the Skeoge Link road at approximately, 3.30pm on June 2.

Police said the first stone were thrown at them at around 4pm. The attacks continued for several hours.

No police officers were injured but the PSNI said that such incidents interfered with investigations.

A police spokesperson said: “When a fatal collision takes place, police must carry out a full and detailed examination at the scene to establish what happened for the sake of the family and for the local community.”
