Police campaign highlights dangers‘one punch’ attacks

A NEW police campaign was launched last week to raise awareness of ‘one punch’ attacks.

The facebook campaign is aimed at young males between teh ages of 18 and 25. It will run during July and will highlight the risks of getting involved in an argument or fight.

When young males within the target group log onto Facebook, the ‘One Punch’ image will appear and when clicked will take them to the PSNI webpage where they can access further information on the campaign. Chief Inspector Nicky Thompson said, “Our figures show that since 2004, twenty people have died as a result of One Punch attacks, and many more have been seriously injured.

“With just one punch, lives have been destroyed and families’ lives have been wrecked. The majority of these incidents are fuelled by alcohol and can have a devastating impact on the victim and their family.

“The offender will likely face a murder or manslaughter charge and have a criminal record for the rest of their life. This type of conviction also imposes restrictions on their ability to travel.”
