Police catch snake

LOCAL police have apprehended a slippery customer after responding to reports of a snake on the loose.

Response officers in Lurgan rushed to rescue the reptile at Birchdale Manor, off the Belfast Road.

The team sprung into action around 12.20pm on Tuesday, June 28.

Initial reports had suggested what could have been a Biblical plague, as it had been thought the snake had fallen from the sky.

However, it wasn’t so much a case of snakes on a plane as snake in a drain as it’s believed it had made its bid for freedom through a pipe - scaling the heights as it were.

Officers attended and located a brown and white snake, identified as a non-venomous Californian King snake, in the garden.

They were able to capture it in a pillow case and looked after the animal until its owner was identified and reunited with their lost pet.

Constable Walters said: “When it was reported the information received was that the snake had fallen from the sky. It transpired that the snake had made its way through piping or ventilation in the upstairs of a house.

“We were able to find it in the garden and get it into a pillow case after taking advice from animal experts.

“This was one of our more unusual incidents but we were happy to be able to rescue ‘King’ the snake and reunite him with his owner.”

This one could well be a case for the ‘Hiss-toric Inquiries Team’!
