The official announcement on the closure follows recent speculation about the future of the suite.

Mr Craig, who is the DUP Group Leader on the Northern Ireland Policing Board, commented: “It is regrettable to see the custody suite closing.

“This will have a negative impact on policing locally as it will take more time for police to deliver prisoners to custody and while officers are doing that they will not be on response policing of out in the community.

“This was an inevitable outcome given the Tory-led cuts we are seeing, not only on policing but right across Northern Ireland.”

It is expected that the custody suite in Lisburn will be closed by the end of the month.

It is believed that those arrested in future will now be taken to the new facility at Musgrave Street Station in Belfast, or if there is an overflow then people will go to either Craigavon or Antrim Police Stations.
