Police flag protest warning

POLICE have issued clear guidelines to those intending to protest in Lurgan tonight (Wednesday December 19).

In a statement, the PSNI said: “We have become aware that there may be a protest in Lurgan. Some of you may not be aware of the laws regarding protests, so we think that it is important that we update you on this.

“Everyone has the right to peacefully protest provided you remain within the law. To remain within the law it is important that you do not block roads or prevent the free flow of vehicle or pedestrian traffic. You should not conceal your identity by covering your face. You must remain peaceful and not use violent or threatening behaviour.

“If you break the law then you can be summoned to court, prosecuted and receive a criminal record.

“We will continue to have sufficient resources to deal with these ongoing protests across Northern Ireland and endeavour to keep all main arterial routes open in order to minimise disruption to the public.

“A number of arrests have already been made in other areas and police will continue to take robust action to ensure the law is upheld.”
