Police helipcopter and stinger used in ‘on the run’ car chase from Cookstown

A police helicopter and a stinger device were deployed as officers on the ground joined their colleagues in the air for a car chase which started in Cookstown and ended in Tamnamore in the early hours of Sunday last.

People living in the Killen and Derrytresk areas reported hearing sirens as the operation unfolded.

The driver of the vehicle involved was eventually arrested for a string of alleged offences including dangerous driving, while a passenger in the car was detained in relation to being an offender unlawfully at large.

A police spokesperson explained how the incident developed: “The pursuit started in Cookstown, but after a brief tour of the country roads around Newmills, Stewartstown, Coalisland and Tamnamore, ended when an officer successfully deployed a stinger and brought the vehicle to a safe stop.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, failing to stop for Police, dangerous driving, assisting an offender unlawfully at large, no driving licence and no insurance.

“The passenger was arrested for being unlawfully at large.”
