The cause of death is not thought to be suspicious but efforts are being made to establish the exact circumstances in which the couple died.

While investigations are at a very early stage, it has been suggested that the couple may have been dead for some time before their bodies were found at their home.

Chief Inspector Mark McClarence said they were investigating the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning but were keeping an open mind about what happened.

He appealed to anyone who had spoken to the couple recently to contact police, as they were “keen to establish a timeline of events”.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later on Friday.
