Police investigating death of man hit by train

A man died after being hit by a train on the Lurgan line on Wednesday evening around 7.20pm.

The man was hit by a train travelling from Newry to Bangor on the Portadown side of the East Way Halt. Police are investigating the circumstances behind the incident.

Seven passengers who were on the train were bussed to their final stops. The train line was closed between Portadown and Lisburn but later reopened this morning (Thursday).

Craigavon deputy mayor, Colin McCusker, said: “It’s very sad and I would extend my sympathies to the person’s friends and family and anyone who has been traumatised by this.

“I’d like to urge people to remember that railway tracks are very, very dangerous.”

Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly, who also offered her sympathies to the man’s loved ones, said that she had been left “shocked” by the incident. “I am also concerned for the wellbeing of the driver and emergency services who had to attend the scene,” she added.
