Carrickfergus motorists are to get a firm reminder to make sure they pay for their fuel at filling stations.

Under a new scheme, all offences of making off without payment will be investigated as a crime.

PSNI D District Inspector for Community Safety, Lynsey Barr said: “Our figures show that in August this year, the number of Making Off Without Payment reports for the policing area of D District stood at 182. This number dropped to 154 for September, but has risen to 204 reports for October.

Police in D District are working jointly with filling station management across Lisburn, Antrim, Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus. Filling station staff now ask customers if they have filled their car with fuel when they come to the counter.”

In addition to this timely reminder, large stands will be erected inside filling stations as a further prompt to motorists to make sure the pay for their fuel.
