Police launch operation to safeguard homes

Police, working with Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership, have launched a new operation to raise awareness around home security as we move into the winter months.

Operation Safer Homes, which is part of the District’s ‘Safe and Secure Together’ campaign, aims to get the message across to local residents about the importance of keeping doors and windows locked.

Foyle Area Commander Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: “Insecure properties are one of the reasons why burglaries continue to happen here in the city. Speaking with our colleagues in the PCSP we have decided that a more direct approach may actually change attitudes towards locking doors and windows.

“Over the coming weeks officers will be on patrol in hot spot areas right across the city and where insecure properties are identified, a card will be left with the householder offering advice and crime prevention information.”
