Police make appeal to cut 
violent crime

Detective Chief Inspector James Mullen said: “Historically incidents of violent crime increase during the month of August. Violence against the person includes domestic assaults and quite often includes incidents which are fuelled by alcohol.

“With many people on holiday and younger people receiving and celebrating exam results during August, we are asking everyone to make that extra effort this month to be responsible and safe and to avoid being drawn into a situation which could have negative consequences on your life.

“If you are going on a night out, be mindful of your alcohol intake and stay with your friends.

“If you find yourself or one of your friends being drawn into an argument, walk away and go home. You’ll be glad in the morning. Remember that one punch can kill!

“If you are at home enjoying a few drinks and things start to get out of hand, take a step back and give yourself time to think.

“Domestic assault can result in a charge and you could find yourself before the courts and end up with a conviction which will affect your employment, travel and education opportunities for a long time.

“If you are the victim of violence, please pick up the phone and ask for help. 
We, along with many partner agencies, are here to offer support and 
help.”
