Police probe assault on linesman at GAA match in Coalisland

Police are appealing for witnesses to alleged assault on a linesman during a GAA match between Derrytresk and Pomeroy at Coalisland.

The linesman is understood to have suffered a serious eye injury on Sunday, July 24 at the sports ground on the Annaghmore Road.

Constable Anderson said: “ Shortly before 5pm a linesman at the match was assaulted by a spectator whilst the match was in progress. It was reported that the suspect, described as being aged in his 20’s, jumped a fence to attack the linesman.

“He was further described as being around 5’8” tall, of stocky build, with short dark spiky hair and was wearing a bright yellow/green coloured Pomeroy top. The linesman was taken to hospital following the assault and treated for a serious eye injury.

“I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to contact police at Dungannon station on 101 quoting reference number 1251 of 24/07/2016. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
