POLICE are probing an incident on Monday night when two cars were set alight in the driveway of a house at Deffrick between Mosside and Dervock in just before midnight.

The chair of Moyle District Council, Councillor Sandra Hunter, said she was disappointed to learn of the incident and condemned the actions of those responsible.

“It does not bear to think what could of happened had the fuel tanks in these cars exploded in a build up area.I would praise the swift response of the fire service who quickly brought the blaze under control.

“It would appear at this early stage that this was a deliberate malicious attack on a family home at midnight when people would have been in their beds and I utterly condemn the people behind this attack. I would ask anyone with information on this to bring it to the police without delay.

Following a visit to the scene, local Moyle Independent Councillor Padraig McShane moved immediately to condemn the attack.

“I received a call from a local resident early on Tuesday morning and was asked to attend the scene. The attack has struck fear into the local community here in Deffrick, a quiet neighbourhood.

“It is simply too early to speculate on a motive for the attack but the community here are sufficiently worried that it may not be the last.

Describing the attack as ‘Direct and Brutal’ the Councillor went on to say; “There is no place in this society for cowards to engage in these actions. We all recall with horror how similar attacks have ended with devastating consequences in the past”, he said.

Two fire engines from Ballymoney were tasked to the incident following an emergency call just after midnight on Tuesday morning.
