Police probe burglary at home of elderly man

A PSNI spokesman confirmed that the pensioner’s Glencairn Park home was entered at around 2am, but said it is not believed that anything was taken during the incident.

Police say it is unclear how many people were involved in the burglary, but a member of the victim’s family has claimed that two male youths gained access to the house before demanding money, threatening the pensioner at knifepoint and making off with his wallet.

Constable Aaron Cooke is appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity to contact police at Newtownabbey Station on the non-emergency number 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds condemned those responsible for the attack and appealed for information to bring them to justice.

Mr Dodds commented: “It is appalling that anyone should rob a senior citizen in this manner, the local community is united in disgust at this disgraceful attack.

“I hope that he will be able to make a full recovery and will feel assured by the many messages of support after his terrible ordeal.

“I urge anyone who can assist the police to identify the culprit and to bring him to justice to call the police on 101 without delay.

“Any assault against an innocent senior citizen must be treated with utmost seriousness. These assailants must be caught and put behind bars.”
