Police promoting Christmas safety

To promote this message, an advertising campaign and associated roadshows are being launched this week as part of the overall Christmas Crime Prevention Campaign.

The renowned ‘Willie Nickit’ character is making his appearance to promote the annual campaign and urge people to take care, both of themselves and their valuables.

Councillor Brian Bloomfield, Chairman of the Lisburn PCSP, speaking at the launch said: “We cannot remind people enough of the importance of looking after themselves and their belongings, particularly at Christmas when there are gifts bought to give to friends and family.

“Please ensure that they are out of sight and not placed below Christmas trees, visible from outside your home.

“Unfortunately there are real-life ‘Willie Nickit’ criminals who will invade your home and steal your personal belongings.

“My message to you is clear; make sure you do not invite burglars into your home by not securing your home properly.

“As a Partnership, we have just been advised of the 15% increase in domestic burglary in Lisburn since this time last year – please do not become the next statistic.

“During December, crime prevention stands will be held at numerous venues right across the City and useful information as well as practical crime prevention material will be distributed, all of which is aimed at reinforcing the ‘Stay Safe Stay Secure’ message ensuring a happy and crime free Christmas and New Year”.

PSNI Area Commander for Lisburn, Chief Inspector Jonathan Wilson added:

“We want people to enjoy a Christmas but remember to protect your property.

“Do not leave valuables on view. Always be mindful of your security and take appropriate crime prevention measures.

“When out shopping, never leave valuables on view in cars. Don’t make it easy for opportunistic thieves.”
