The charges relate to an incident in Portstewart in the early hours of Sunday, October 31, when cannabis resin with a street value of 5,000 was allegedly found on the defendant.

Constable Simpson told the court he could connect the accused to the charges and said police objected to bail.

The officer told the court that the defendant and another male, came to their attention on the Coleraine Road in Portstewart at 1.55am.

When police approached Teacy he attempted to push a package into his jacket and made off. Police chased the pair and carried out a search of Teacy.

Four bars of cannibis resin were found, he said.

Solicitor Denise Gillen asked whether the defendant was known to police. Constable Simpson told the court that enquiries had been made but that the defendant was unknown to them.

Ms Gillen said Teacy currently lived on his own and that his father, who was present in court, was ‘deeply annoyed’ by the incident and that it was ‘humiliating’ for the family.

“The defendant would say that this didn’t belong to him,” Ms Gillen said. “Another person was at the scene and there is some relevance in that.”

The solicitor asked the District Judge, Richard Wilson, to ‘take a chance’ and grant Teacy bail.

She said: “It is a considerable quantity, but he has no previous convictions in the drugs trade.”

District Judge Wilson refused bail on the grounds that the amount found had a street value of 5,000.

He said: “I would been concerned about the likelihood to reoffend in order to re-coup some of the losses.”

Teacy was remanded in custody and will re-appear via video link on November 29.
