Until recently the drug was sold legally over the counter and was available on the internet as plant food or a research chemical. A gram of the substance could be bought for between 10 and 15.

It was thought a number of children, some as young as 10 were experimenting with the drug which was reported to have claimed two lives in the past number of weeks. Following a public outcry the government banned the substance with effect from April 16.
