Police solve over 500 more crimes in city

Statistics released this week have shown that there were “positive criminal justice outcomes” for 507 more crimes in 2015/16, an increase of just over 5% on the previous year.

Lisburn and Castlereagh City District Commander, Superintendent Sean Wright said: “I am pleased that we have been able to deliver outcomes on 507 more crimes in 2015/16 and consequently that more people have received closure after being the victim of crime.

“Over the last year we have been tireless in pursuing investigative opportunities to bring more people before the courts and we will continue with this robust approach over the coming months.

“Police officers across Lisburn and Castlereagh City are determined that anyone who commits a crime realises the consequences of their actions.

“The statistics also highlight the successes we have had in our fight against the illegal supply and use of drugs.

“During 2015/16 we made 152 more drugs seizures than during 2014/15 and we arrested 233 people for drugs offences, an increase of 55 on the previous year. The public told us that this was important and we have responded. Police are out on the streets every day, pro-actively tackling the scourge of drugs within our communities and we will continue with this approach in the months ahead.

“Robbery also decreased, dropping from 25 incidents in 2014/15 to 18 in 2015/16.

“While we have enjoyed some successes I acknowledge that there has been a rise in some crimes, including burglary

“Even one additional crime is one too many and we will continue to work hard to improve over the coming year.

“It remains though that a high percentage of burglaries are committed whenever doors or windows are left open so, once again I encourage everyone in our community to secure their property, to look out for their neighbours and to report any unusual or suspicious activity promptly to police.

“Finally, I would like to say thank you to the community and to the many voluntary groups, community groups and statutory agencies who have helped us over this past year. Their ongoing support has proven to be invaluable in enabling us to keep people safe in Lisburn and Castlereagh City.”
