Police traffic team to be established

POLICE are mounting a new crackdown on motorists along the Causeway Coast and the Glens area, it has been revealed.

A dedicated team from Roads Policing is to be set up this Easter with patrols being mounted from Portrush to Larne as well as extensive coverage of the Glens.

The news was revealed to members of Moyle District Policing Partnership at a meeting in the Glens Hotel, Cushendall, last Thursday night by the Area Commander for Ballymoney and Moyle, Chief Inspector John Magill.

Commenting on figures which show that the number of persons reported for careless and dangerous driving had increased from 33 to 36 during the period April to December 2008 and 2009 (9.1%), Chief Inspector Magill stressed that bad driving would not be tolerated.

“If we have evidence of people donutting or wheel spinning we will report them to the Public Prosecution Service and recommend a prosecution,” he said.

The Chief then said that a Roads Policing Team will be established around Easter time to deal with the Causeway Road as well as the Glens.

“Those who break the lasw will be before the District Judge,” he warned.

Chief Inspector Magill also appealed to the community who, he said, “must assist the police in identifying those who drive in a careless or dangerous manner.”
