Police warn of copper thefts

A SPATE of copper thefts in recent months has led police to issue security advice to property owners.

Buildings, especially those under construction, have been targeted in 36 separate thefts across the local policing district which includes Banbridge.

With this in mind the PSNI have advised people to make security a top priority by taking a number of steps.

A spokesperson said, “Make regular checks of your property and ask a neighbour or someone living close by to check the doors and windows every so often. This is especially important when you consider that copper thefts in the form of hot water tanks and piping can result in significant water damage. This can go unnoticed for days or even weeks if the property is not visited regularly.

“Never hide spare keys under doormats, flower pots etc - thieves aren't stupid - hidden keys only make life easy for them.

“If your windows do not already have a keyed lock fitted, then consider having suitable locks fitted, particularly on ground floor windows or upper windows that may be easily accessed from a flat roof.

“Visible intruder alarms will often be a deterrent to a burglar. If you decide to have one fitted, make sure it is installed by a reputable company and meets recognised standards required by the National Security Inspectorate or Security Systems and Alarms Inspectorate Board,” the spokesperson said.

For further information and advice please contact the crime prevention officer at your local police station by calling 0845 600 8000.

Any member of the public who notices any suspicious activity at vacant properties should inform police immediately.
