Police warn of distraction thefts

DETECTIVES in Ballymena and Larne are appealing for information after money was stolen from two business premises during distraction theft incidents, last week.

At around 2pm on Monday, May 3, a group of people described as being foreign nationals went into a shop on Ballymena’s Queen Street.

The group comprised four women and a man, and while some distracted a member of staff, a woman went into a rear store and stole money from a desk.

The gang left the shop in a grey Vauxhall Omega.

Then on Wednesday, May 5, at about 3pm, a group of four woman and two men went into an off-licence at Point Street in Larne and while some distracted a staff member, a woman went into a back room and stole money.

Police are investigating whether the same gang was involved in both incidents.

In both cases, at least one of the women appeared to be pregnant.

Anyone who can help identify the thieves is asked to contact the CID in either Ballymena or Larne.
