Police warning after increase in vehicle thefts

There has been a small increase in the number of reports of cars being stolen in the Antrim and Newtownabbey policing district over the last few weeks.

Chief Inspector Arthur Davidson said: “The simplest step car owners can take is to ensure their vehicles are locked when not in use, especially overnight.

“Most people have cars that lock with a key fob however we would recommend that you also take a few seconds to check the driver door handle after you have pressed the button to make sure it is locked.

“We also recommend that you keep car keys out of sight and never leave valuables in your car that would attract a passing criminal.

“Cars are not cheap these days and although everyone should have insurance no one wants their premiums to go up or to have the hassle of dealing with claim departments should you be unfortunate enough to have your car stolen.

Taking a few extra seconds to check your car is properly locked could save you a lot of heartache and money.”
