Police warning for cyclists

POLICE are reminding cyclists that footpaths are for pedestrians.

Neighbourhood Constable Sharon McGonigle says that the Union Street and Railway Road areas of Coleraine have become dangerous for pedestrians.

Constable McGonigle said: “ People who cycle along busy footpaths are creating a real and unnecessary danger to pedestrians.

“We have received reports of handbags getting caught in handlebars and of people being dragged along or knocked off balance as cyclists force their way through the crowds.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will not hesitate to take appropriate action against anyone found to be engaging in this activity.

“The footpaths are for pedestrians, they are not to be used by cyclists as a convenient short-cut or a means to avoid the town’s one-way traffic system.”
