Police warning on cycle safety

THE Neighbourhood Policing Team in Lurgan are reminding cyclists to take proper precautions and ensure that they are meeting the legal requirements when they are out and about on their bikes.

Neighbourhood Constable Allen explained: “Cyclists are the same as any other road user and must stay within the law, even if you are a younger cyclist and simply out for a quick cycle around.

“With the darker winter evenings cyclists must be aware that it can be difficult for other road users to see you on the road. At night you must use front and rear lights and have a red rear reflector as well. They should be in good working order, be properly aligned, and be kept clean at all times. Reflective material such as belts, arm and ankle bands, and wheel reflectors will also help you to be seen by other road users.

“Remember too that a proper fitting safety helmet is also an essential piece of equipment that riders should wear every time they set off no matter what age they are. For added safety on the roads we would remind cyclists to make use of cycle lanes whenever possible.

“You should also make sure that your bike is in good working order and regularly test brakes.”

Anyone who would like further advice on cycle safety should contact their local Neighbourhood Police Team on 0845 600 8000.
