Police warning on dangers of underage drinking

POLICE in Banbridge are warning young people about the dangers of underage drinking and accepting alcohol from strangers during the long summer break.

Inspector Jacqui Gillespie of Banbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team, said police are “determined” to educate young people about the dangers of underage drinking.

“Not only are young people who drink alcohol jeopardising their health, but they are also taking chances with their future,” she said. “Drinking under the age of 18 is breaking the law and even a low-level youth diversion intervention can diminish education opportunities, as many colleges and universities ask for this information on their application forms.”

Inspector Gillespie said it was “essential” for parents to speak to their children and make them aware of the consequences of getting caught up this illegal activity.

“We do not want to prevent anyone from having a good time, but we do want to protect our young people from the harm that can come from underage drinking and antisocial behaviour,” she added. “Police are not only concentrating on taking alcohol from underage drinkers, but also on preventing the supply of alcohol to minors.”

She said police in Banbridge would continue to focus on underage drinking and build on the success of recent local partnership initiatives between Banbridge District Council, local licensees and the voluntary sector to help eradicate the problem.
