Police warning on quads

POLICE were called to Kilwilke last Wednesday (June 2) following complaints of illegal quad use.

Lurgan Neighbourhood Policing Team responded to complaints of illegal quad use in the estate at around 5.30pm.

Police spoke to the owner who was warned in relation to the legal requirements of using quads and motorcycles and the dangers to other members of the public.

A local officer explained: "Quads, Go-Ped scooters and some scramblers do not comply with Construction and Use regulations and Vehicle Safety Standards and therefore are restricted to off-road use only.

“However, this does not mean they can be driven anywhere off-road. These vehicles should only be used on private land where you have permission and should not be used on pavements, roads, public property or parks, this includes the green grass areas and black paths thoughout the Craigavon area.”

The officer added: “We would urge young people to consider the people living in their community or the areas where these vehicles are being used.

Parents too are asked to play their part by watching what their children are doing on these vehicles. No parent wants their child brought home for any wrong doing but if necessary police can refer an individual to the Police Youth Diversion Officer for prosecution purposes.

“Police also have the power to seize these vehicles. It is important young people recognise that this is a real possibility and has happened before. Police will enforce the necessary legislation in an effort to ensure public safety.”
