80 pupils learnabout a careeras a doctor

EIGHTY pupils from schools across Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane including Foyle and Londonderry College and Limavady Grammar attended a Western Trust event devoted to understanding medicine as a career.

Students were able to participate in practical workstations and interact with senior doctors and consultants from a wide range of specialities.

Dr Anne Kilgallen, Western Trust Medical Director said: “For students who are contemplating a career in medicine, this is a unique opportunity to speak with doctors who practice in many different medical and surgical specialties. We are delighted to open our doors in this way to the school community. We hope that some of these students will be our future medical workforce.”

Dr William Dickey, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Western Trust Medical Sub-Dean gave a talk giving an insight into life as a doctor and Dr Inez Cooke, Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University and Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, made a presentation on preparing an application, personal statements and interview skills.

Mr Gerard Guckian, Chairman, Western Trust who closed the event said: “This is exactly the sort of work that the Trust strives to be involved in, engaging with and supporting our local schools, and all those involved should be commended for their efforts.”
