Call to use social media to help fight Mid Ulster littering and fly-tipping problems

Councillor James Burton has called on Mid Ulster District Council to harness the power of social media to raise awareness about littering and fly-tipping – an issue which farmers are acutely aware of.

The DUP representative for Dungannon DEA had already raised this issue at a recent Policy & Resources committee meeting.

He was concerned about livestock in fields and the potential presence of plastic.

Rubbish being thrown along the side of the road was also a matter of concern in relation to young lambs and cattle.

He commented: “This is about the littering and the fly-tipping. Can I make a proposal that we maybe use our own social media to get this type of message out?

“The farming community is in full swing – it is silage time - and unfortunately a lot of this litter ends up in fields and silage, which is harmful to animals. So, can I make that a proposal that we use our own social media to get this out to our constituents?”

The proposal was seconded by Councillor Denise Johnston (SDLP), who was still Deputy Chair of Council when the meeting was held.

Councillor Frances Burton, the then Chair of Council, remarked: “And I think as well, when bottles are left a lot of the time in these white bags — and I know van drivers get a bad press and maybe we shouldn’t blame them all — but there are a lot of animals that get injured when they are out walking them to fields and what have you. So, it is cruelty as well.”
