Concerns over pylon ‘blight on landscape’

Plans to create a North South Electricity Interconnector could create a ‘blight on the landscape’.

The Chair of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough’s Council’s planning committee has expressed his disappointment at the decision to grant planning approval to the interconnector.

In September, Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon MLA, granted full planning permission for the project which will create a 400kv overhead electricity line connecting with the Republic of Ireland.

Referencing a letter of correspondence Council received from SONI’s head of infrastructure, Alan Campbell with regards to the decision to approve planning permission, the committee Chair, Councillor Darren McNally, said he was “very disappointed”.

“I am very disappointed by this decision,” said the committee Chair.

Ulster Unionist councillor Sam Nicholson said he too was “disappointed” by the overhead nature of the project.

“It is disappointing,” said Cllr Nicholson. “I don’t think anyone is against it as an overall scheme but we want to see it go underground.

“Pylons are a blight on our landscape but it is done now, the decision has been made and we just have to wait and see what happens.”
