Council engages with Facebook in Old Town Hall name-change

Banbridge District Council is considering using Facebook to gauge community opinion on its proposed name change for the Old Town Hall.

At a recent meeting of the Leisure and Development Committee, it was recommended to conduct the survey after some councillors suggested a name change to Banbridge Market House may cause division among the town’s residents.

Concerns were first raised by Councillor Marie Hamilton who said the name change could divide opinion among ratepayers.

Councillor Jim McElroy said the local landmark had been known by its current name for many years, although Councillor Paul Gribben commented that the building was designed in the same way as the Market Houses in Castlewellan and Rathfriland.

The idea to give a new name to the property follows its recent new look, due to a £830,000 renovation programme at the Grade B1 listed building which was completed and re-opened by former council chairman, Mrs Joan Baird, this time last year.
