The planning application, which is currently listed on the council’s website, is for a restaurant with ‘drive through’, customer order displays, play area and car parking at the town’s former lorry park.

A decision was taken behind closed doors at a meeting of the borough council last month for the local authority to proceed with the sale of the ramp lorry park at Circular Road.

Last June, the council reported that fast food giant McDonald’s had expressed an interest in opening a new branch in the town.

A tender for a drive-through McDonald’s restaurant was successful in the development brief bidding process for the 1.27 acre council-owned ramp lorry park site which was on the market for £350,000.

The anticipated return of the fast food giant McDonald’s to Larne has been heralded by the council as a “major economic and employment boost for the borough with the prospect of a global giant investing locally”.

Meanwhile, NI Water has stated previously: “It is currently an undeveloped site as there are no pre-existing connections to either NI Water’s water or sewer network.

“We will continue to work with the council to facilitate development opportunities wherever possible, acknowledging the very constrained conditions within the Larne area.” Click here to read
