Meanwhile, planning permission has been approved for almost 20 new seafront apartments in Carrick.

Nineteen apartments have been given the go-ahead by the borough council at Scotch Quarter.

The proposal relates to three vacant red-brick terraced houses overlooking Belfast Lough.

The properties, which were on the market for £200,000, are located on a 0.2 acre site within a conservation area.

Plans for the new development include 14 duplex apartments in a new building and alterations to two existing properties to provide five new apartments with private parking areas.

Previously, the site had planning permission for residential and commercial units including 22 apartments, five commercial outlets and an office.

Of the properties constructed in Mid and East Antrim during the past nine months, one third was in Carrickfergus. This year, 112 new homes were built in the town and 16 in Greenisland.

A recent Housing Land Availability Report stated that there is potentially 2,500 building sites in Carrickfergus.
