Rankin thanks public for concert support

Mr Rankin was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes four years ago, aged 30, and put onto insulin injections. Now free of insulin injections and medication, the Councillor said he was glad to see such a large turnout for the concert, held on Saturday past.

The concert, held in Dromore Community Centre, was organised by Council Chairman, Jim McElroy, who himself is a diabetes sufferer.

“I would just like to thank the many people who have purchased tickets for the Chairman’s concert,” said Councillor Rankin.

“I was able to sell all of the tickets allocated to myself and point numerous other people in the direction of the Community Centre where extra tickets were on sale.

“There were also generous people who, though unable to attend, have passed on donations towards Diabetes UK.

“Again I would like to thank the Chairman, Jim McElroy, for sponsoring this event and thank everyone who took part and supported it.”

Those taking part included world champion pipe band, St. Lawrence O’Toole, Bailliesmills Accordion Band and Banbridge Musical Society. Compere on the evening was Banbridge comedian Gene Fitzpatrick.

Councillor Rankin told the Leader two weeks ago of his own personal battle with diabetes.

“At over 18 stone I was told if my lifestyle didn’t change I was heading for an early grave,” he said.

“The medical experts have described me as an odd and exceptional case,” he said, “but then, as my family and friends keep telling me, it didn’t take experts to work that one out.”

The DUP councillor said it was thanks to God’s help that his diabetes was now under control.
