The borough council has taken part in a national campaign to pay tribute to the role of those who have had a career at sea since 2015.

To mark the occasion, the Red Ensign will be hoisted at Larne Harbour during a ceremony on September 3 with representatives from the Merchant Navy Association, Royal Navy, RNLI and Seafarers’ Association in attendance in line with government restrictions over social distancing due to the Covid pandemic.

In addition, the Red Ensign will fly at civic buildings – The Braid, Ballymena; Smiley Buildings, Larne and Carrickfergus Town Hall, for a week from August 31.

The council says: “This annual event provides us, as a borough, with an opportunity to reflect on our rich maritime history and the significance of Larne Port to our economy.”

The UK relies on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of imports. Merchant Navy Day is commemorated on September 3, the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Athenia, the first British merchant vessel lost during World War 2.
