Speaking at Monday’s AGM, Mrs Morrow extended sympathy to families who have lost loved ones.

“On behalf of the council, I wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time.”

Cllr Morrow also acknowledged the impact of isolation for those who suffer from underlying health conditions and older people.

She went to say the economic life of the borough has suffered and is facing “very challenging days for everyone”.

She also had a “very special mention for the modern day heroes who we have been paying tribute to every Thursday evening with the NHS Clap for Carers”.

She recognised the role of key workers, including council staff, who have been to the forefront of delivering vital services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I also wish to put on record the chief executive and senior management who have ensured a number of critical services have continued”.

She praised the generosity of community volunteers who have been available for anyone requiring help “in these challenging times”..

She said she believes it is vital for the borough to return, once Covid restrictions are relaxed, to a “fast resumption of service”.

“I have no doubt that MEA will be able to avail of all opportunities as we move forward.”

Reflecting on the past 12 months, Cllr Morrow said: “It is hard to believe where the year has gone since last May. I have enjoyed my time in office , giving me the opportunity of getting round the borough, meeting community groups, different organisations , also so many nice people and representing the council at events locally and in London on several occasions.

“I would like to thank my Deputy Mayor, Councillor Beth Adger, for all her help and support over the past year, as the mayoral requests were overwhelming at times and she was always there to help out.”

Cllr Morrow also thanked all council staff for their hard work “whether it is in an office in Larne, Carrickfergus, Ballymena or in the parks, waste collection, graveyards, leisure or any of the other frontline services”. She also expressed gratitude to fellow councillors for their friendship and support.

“I would like to wish my successor all the best for the year ahead. It will be a difficult and different year with all the restrictions to work round. I would like to thank my party colleagues for giving me the opportunity to have the honour and privilege of serving the people of Mid and East Antrim as Mayor.

“I had a wonderful year although slightly disappointed that it all came to an abrupt halt mid March due to the coronavirus pandemic. So many groups and organisations had celebration events organised that have had to be put on hold. I am sorry that I missed celebrating with you as Mayor.

“This has been a tough and concerning few weeks for many struggling through lockdown, isolation and in some cases loneliness. There is a long way to go yet before we are through this but management, staff and councillors at Mid and East Antrim will always be there. If anyone feel they need help or support we are only a phone call away.”
