DUP Councillor Angela Smyth has welcomed a commitment from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads for the measure to reduce the risk of vehicles getting stuck at the location.

Cllr Smyth said: “We will all have heard about or witnessed lorry drivers, often those from overseas, get stuck at the Black Arch and have to risk reversing to find a detour.

“This new signage will include an advance warning sign, opposite the car park in Drain’s Bay, making drivers aware of the low bridge and advising them of the alternative route they should take.

“There will also be an upgrade to the existing signage opposite Branch Road, on Old Glenarm Road, giving directions to Larne and Belfast.

“This is something which has concerned residents on the Coast Road for some time and I am pleased that DfI Roads will take action to make this stretch of road safer for both road users and residents.”
