Youngsters lobby for BMX track

Speaking at September’s monthly meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Paul Berry praised Council and its effort to invest in its local parks but told of a request he had received from a number of young people in Laurelvale.

“I was actually lobbied by a group of young lads, when I was at a park in Laurelvale with my family,” said Cllr Berry.

“They asked if there was anyway we could provide them with a small BMX track on land within the play park that is not developed.

“Could I have a conversation with a council officer about this? It is a great opportunity to provide something for an age group, that so often we are critical of.

“They are not asking for much, it would not cost a lot of money but could be a great facility for these young people.”

Council’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Kevin Savage, said council officers will arrange some discussion around the development of a BMX track in the area.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Berry revealed that a site visit has been arranged.

“Council officers have agreed to meet me on site to discuss the possibility of this BMX track,” said Cllr Berry.

“I would be keen to have these young lads who approached me about the idea involved in this process as well, the area of land they are talking about really does lend itself to this idea.”

“There were very polite when they approached me and I really hope I can deliver this for them.

“The site visit is no guarantee that it will come to fruition but it is a positive step in the right direction.”
