Cuts to transport slammed

Cuts to the community transport services for the disabled, elderly and vulnerable have been described as an ‘abominable crime’ by the Upper Bann Workers’ Party.

“These cuts will have devastating impact on the most vulnerable, and will greatly increase the potential for further social exclusion and isolation throughout Craigavon & Banbridge area,” said Damien Harte of the Workers Party.

“In real terms, the 28% cuts to the budget available for rural and urban services equates to potentially 650 journeys per month to the most vulnerable.

“The shocking impact of these cuts is that we are now witnessing vulnerable people including older people and the disabled, losing their only independent access to specialised accessible transport and access to essential services.

“The Upper Bann Workers Party have been quite clear about our opposition to austerity. We offer solidarity to those affected and their families and will offer any help to lobby local politicians to reverse this cold, cruel and disproportionate attack on the most vulnerable members of our community.”
