Debate on ‘fracking’to be held in Lisburn

Lagan Valley Greens are presenting a debate on fracking hosted by Friends’ School, Lisburn next month.

Speakers include local politicians Anna Lo, Basil McCrea and Sammy Wilson. Mr Ross Brown and a representative for minister Mark H Durkan will also take partin the free-of-charge, October 11 event.

Lagan Valley Green Party spokesman Jonathan McMurray said, “This issue is particularly important for our country. Although many people often overlook environmental issues unless directly affected by them, fracking has a high media profile. This is both from the zeal shown by many figures in the UK government as well as the protests.

“The issue involves the economy, the environment and energy policy – all things that are increasingly important in our modern world. For many, the issue is confusing as there are many half-truths being put out from sources with ulterior motives.

“Despite the fact we are a political party, we have endeavoured that the event should remain as neutral and informative as possible to allow all sides to express their views before being questioned on them by the audience.

“We have invited representatives from all the major parties in Northern Ireland as well as Environment Minister Durkan and Tamboran, the private company who aim to exploit the natural gas in shale via fracking.

“I am saddened that Tamboran have declined to send a representative, but they have issued a statement which I am happy to read out during the event.”
